Working in Grain

At Grain, our mission is to improve lives through meaningful food experiences. Grain is a food experience company that offers meals on demand and catering for any occasion.

WHAT WILL WE EAT NEXT?

Grain is a food experience company that offers Meals On Demand and Catering for any occasion. Our mission is to improve lives through meaningful food experiences.

YOU ARE GRAIN

We have the opportunity to build the company we always want to be part of. So why not build the perfect one together, where we can all make an impact, earn, and grow? And since we’re spending all this time here, why not make it fun? Even if you leave someday, we hope you leave Grain better than you found it.

This starts with having the right people — if you’re reading this, you might just be one of us. You are Grain.

Everyone working at Grain represents Grain. When Jhen answers a call, when Bala delivers an order, when Ah Wu cooks a meal. The reason we continue to grow and serve millions of customers is because of this simple, yet profound concept called

Grain’s Circle of Life:

CORE VALUES

1. Create magic for customers. Why do we do what we do? One of the best ways to create meaningful food experiences is to WOW our customers. Treat our customers the way we would like to be treated. Practise hospitality — notice the details others will miss, anticipate needs before they arise, and go the unexpected extra mile for our customers. Trigger their (and our) happy hormones. People will remember how you made them feel, so create an experience that is magical for them! Why do we do what we do? 2. Be open, curious, and committed to learning. We want to build a big startup — not a big business — that never stops learning and growing. Compound yourself. Always have the intellectual flexibility that we do not know it all, that we can learn from everywhere and everyone, and always invest time in learning. Learn what great looks like and strive to be a better human being. Think of feedback as a gift to improve ourselves. Be both the student and the teacher. 3. Be excellent and always insist on the highest standards. There's a saying in Grain that "fun is a subset of high performance". It's way more enjoyable and energising when we're working with people who take pride and passion in what they do. High standards are contagious and help us build better products and services. People are drawn to high standards - they want to join our team and will adapt quickly. High standards also mean less waste, more profits, reduced bureaucracy, and better focus! 4. Have fun and care a lot. In many ways, we built Grain to feel like a home. We love it when everyone brings their whole self to work and enjoys what they do. We don't like working with assholes. A lot more gets done when you don't care who gets the credit — so uplift each other, don't step on your neighbour, genuinely care — and never be afraid to have a little fun. 5. Disagree and (really) commit. As the team grows, consensus building isn't always the path to finding the best ideas. Often times in meetings, you may find yourselves agreeing without fully supporting an idea. Don't do that. Disagree if you need to until the best ideas emerge - then do everything to commit to making them win (harder when it's not your own idea — but a lot more fun going the same direction together!). IMPROVING LIVES THROUGH MEANINGFUL FOOD EXPERIENCES

This begins with the food, experience, and extends to the community and our planet. We want this simple daily activity of eating to bring good, and we are just getting started.

Making healthy, tasty

Our R&D team experiments with nutritious ingredients, herbs and spices and more to bring out the best flavour in every meal. The result is a wholesome meal that delights you every day.

Bringing people together

We are building a bonding experience around food to make every Grain meal with your loved ones another chapter of happy — and tasty — memories.

Supporting local communities

We are lending a helping hand to aspiring businesses, the local arts scene, and those in need, whether it’s tapping on our reach and resources or feeding them healthy and tasty meals.

Taking care of the planet

From sourcing for sustainable ingredients and packaging to minimising food waste and our carbon footprint, we are always thinking of ways to reduce our impact on the environment.

Hungry for answers

  • You can apply directly via the job board above or email us at tech-jobs@grain.com.sg (for tech openings), sales-jobs@grain.com.sg (for sales openings) and jobs@grain.com.sg (all other openings) and we will be in touch if there’s a good match.

  • Sung the chief nightmare, Ena who mothers over everything, Isaac who knows how to make what customers love, Ernest who leads our cool technology (and you call when the wifi is broken), Marcus who keeps us moral and rational, Ralphael who will educate you on fancy culinary terms, Andy who can sell ice to Eskimos, Sophia who tell our stories — and many more heroes in the background.

  • We raised tens of millions from The Lo & Behold Group, Openspace Ventures, Singha, X-Inc, Koh Boon Hwee, Cento Ventures, Ivan Lee, Adam Slater, Tee Yih Jia (Sam Goi, aka Popiah King), Zopim mafia and a bunch more.

  • We are located across a few floors in this scrappy building in Central East side of Singapore - Tai Seng.

  • The process can differ between roles, but we usually start with a quick screening call followed by in-person interviews to be sure we’re on the same page and a good fit for each other.

    1. Quick 45 minute screening interview to make sure we are on the same page. Here, we try to briefly understand cultural fit, where you’re at, what you’re optimising for, strengths and weaknesses, relevant experience, etc.
    2. 1–1.5 hour deeper interview with the functional lead. There may be some overlapping questions here — we don’t compare notes between interviews to keep the process independent.
    3. [Only certain roles] 3–4 hour practical interview.
    4. [Only certain roles] Interview with CEO/COO.
    5. Reference check.

If you read this far, some useful tips:

    • Always follow up after each interview - tell us things you learned, what you enjoyed, why you would be a good fit, ask more questions, supplement your answers — this will go a long way!
    • This is a basic detail but people fail at it and we are the kind of company that likes helping you out — reply all in your emails. Make sure everyone that needs to be in the loop (especially your champions in this case!) are in to/cc-ed in each thread.
    • “Any questions for me?” → The right answer is always yes. And belt out the 3 questions you prepared for this interview. Some good questions: “How did I do in this interview? Please give me brutal feedback.”, “Pre-mortem: If I joined Grain and I was no longer with you all in 6-12 months. Why?”, “What do you think are the most important traits for this job?”
    • Pro tip for sales interviews: Sales is more about asking questions, instead of talking. Learn this in 1:38 minutes here.

  • We generally start around 9AM and end at 6/7PM+ to have dinner with family or loved ones. Unlike the current remote trend, we enjoy getting together in-person to work, with the option of having 1-2 days remote (depending on the role). We are really quite flexible and reasonable human beings. If you have matters to attend to or errands to run, be aligned with your team/manager and go — ultimately, we are very focused on outcomes (not activity).

It’s also worth mentioning that people tend to get pretty committed to Grain. To the point that it’s all-consuming. We’ve seen it many times before. But here’s the thing, there’s a time and season for everything. So find that balance. Go home, play with your dog, have a life outside work. It’s really okay.

  • Grain is in the growth stage. We do millions of dollars in revenue and currently the key focus is on building a 100-year old brand. Our goal is to make Grain a well-oiled machine that consistently pushes out great products, has healthy margins, innovates constantly, and has a well-paced high performing team.
